The Minister for Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, José Manuel Albares, met today, Friday, with his Peruvian counterpart, Elmer Schialer, to go over matters concerning Spanish-Peruvian bilateral relations, with particular emphasis on the economic and trade, cultural, development cooperation and regional agenda chapters.
With more than 500 Spanish companies operating in Peru across a wide range of sectors, and being the second largest investor in the country, Albares highlighted the importance of the soon-to-begin negotiations to conclude a new bilateral double taxation agreement. He also underlined Spain's support for Peru's accession to the OECD, and the interest among Spanish companies in strengthening their investment in the country.
During their meeting, Albares and Schialer also signed the Peru-Spain Country Partnership Framework 2024-2027 and a Spanish language promotion agreement, which will further deepen the strategic relationship between our nations.
Peru-Spain Country Partnership Framework 2024-2027
The new Peru-Spain Country Partnership Framework 2024-2027, which will provide an extra boost for the joint work of the Spanish Cooperation and the Peruvian authorities, will strengthen areas such as gender equality and access to water, as well as new fields such as environmental protection.
The new Country Partnership Framework, which defines the shared cooperation strategy for sustainable development in the 2024-2027 period, includes an estimated mobilisation of Spanish resources of €160 million channelled through various cooperation instruments, both reimbursable and non-reimbursable.
During this stage, Spanish Development Cooperation in Peru will concentrate its efforts on achieving inclusive, innovative and environmentally friendly economic development; improving the living conditions of the urban and rural population through access to water and sanitation, health and employment services; as well as democratic and equal coexistence, free of gender-based violence and discrimination.
Spanish language promotion agreement
The Spanish language promotion agreement will contribute towards establishing the foundations for collaboration to strengthen the recognition and presence of our common language in diplomacy and international organisations, especially in the United Nations system.
Albares has assured Schialer of Spain's full support to ensure the success of the International Congress of the Spanish Language, to be held in the Peruvian city of Arequipa in 2025.
