PRESS RELEASE 041

Albares meets with Ghana's Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration to deepen relations between the two countries

The minister's visit centred on the signing of two memorandums of understanding to strengthen cooperation in tourism and sport

July 16, 2024

The Minister for Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, José Manuel Albares, has received his Ghanaian counterpart, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, at the Palace of Santa Cruz to discuss issues of common interest between the two countries.

Minister Botchwey's visit continues the deepening of relations between Spain and Ghana, as evidenced by the recent visit of the Ghanaian Secretary of State during the event held last May at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation for the promotion of the Afrodiaspora.

At present, the excellent relations between the two countries are centred on issues such as migration, development cooperation and security in West Africa. In this spirit, Albares expressed his satisfaction at the progress made in the collaboration on maritime safety and the projects implemented by the FIIAPP.

Fluid economic, social and cultural relations

Minister Albares expressed his support for Ghana's economic stabilisation through examples such as the Paris Club agreement of 28 June on the treatment of public debt, which will bring prosperity and progress to the country. In addition, he conveyed the growing interest of Spanish companies in continuing to invest in Ghana.

Specifically, the tourism sector (which accounts for about 6% of Ghana's GDP) currently offers numerous opportunities for business cooperation, and it is hoped that the memorandum of understanding signed in this area will facilitate synergies and initiate a sustainable and balanced growth path.

Cultural diplomacy is another area of great interest for both governments. Spain promotes cultural development through numerous projects in different regions of Ghana. In this regard, the Minister for Foreign Affairs noted the growing interest in Spanish language and culture in the country, as evidenced by the opening of a new lectureship programme at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.

In this sphere, sport plays an important role for both peoples. The memorandum signed by Albares and Bothwey provides, among other things, for exchanges of school sports programmes, as well as the promotion of women in sport.
