The Minister for Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, José Manuel Albares, has held a telephone conversation with the President of the Junta de Andalucía, Juan Manuel Moreno Bonilla, on the agreement relating to Gibraltar.
Albares explained that positions on the agreement are getting closer, as was made clear at the meeting held on 12 April in Brussels between the Spanish Minister for Foreign Affairs himself; the British Foreign Secretary, David Cameron; and the Vice-President of the European Commission, Maroš Šefčovič, who is responsible for negotiations between the EU and the United Kingdom following Brexit. At this meeting, the highest level meeting so far, understandings were reached on broad lines of policy, including the use of the airport, goods traffic and mobility. The Minister also conveyed to the President of the Junta that the Agreement will safeguard Spain's position on sovereignty.
In his conversation with the President of the Junta, Albares asked him for the support of the Junta de Andalucía for this agreement, which will bring shared prosperity to the region of Campo de Gibraltar and the 300,000 Andalusians who live there. He has also offered him his full availability to meet in person.
This contact comes prior to the meeting that the minister will hold on Monday at the headquarters of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation with the mayors of Campo de Gibraltar and the Junta de Andalucía. This will be the third meeting in which the Junta will have been present in just over two years, in fruitful contacts in which both the mayors and the Junta have heard from the Minister the different negotiating positions and given him their comments.
The Minister conveyed to the President of the Junta his personal commitment to the agreement, to the Campo de Gibraltar and to the well-being and external projection of Andalusia.
