The Minister for Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, José Manuel Albares, together with the Director of the Spanish Royal Academy (RAE) and President of the Association of Spanish Language Academies, Santiago Muñoz Machado, the Director of the Cervantes Institute, Luis García Montero, and the Mayor of Cadiz, José María González, signed an institutional declaration on the organisation of the 9th International Congress of the Spanish Language (CILE) in Cadiz on Friday, to be held from 27 to 30 March 2023.
The presentation event was also attended by the President of the Provincial Council of Cadiz, Juan Carlos Ruiz, and the Councillor for Tourism, Culture and Sport of the Regional Government of Andalusia, Arturo Bernal.
This year’s edition will focus on “The Spanish language, mixing and interculturality”, thus consolidating the 9th International Congress of the Spanish Language as the most important forum for reflection on the status of the Spanish language, the challenges it faces and opportunities it offers.
The Cervantes Institute, together with the Spanish Royal Academy (RAE) and the Association of Spanish Language Academies (ASALE), have driven the holding of these International Congresses of the Spanish Language since 1997. The Congresses are aimed at academics, journalists, students, publishers, the cultural, political and economic world, and all those people interested in the development and promotion of language and culture in Spanish in general.
The International Congresses of the Spanish Language have historically involved the participation of leading figures from a wide range of social and professional sectors who have played very important roles in driving the promotion and unity of the language, along with dialogue with the whole Hispanic cultural community.
The last time an International Congress of the Spanish Language was held in Spain was 22 years ago, and this is now the second time that the Congress is to be held in our country, after the CILE was held in Valladolid in 2001.
Spain thus clearly shows its decisive commitment to the care, promotion and unity of the Spanish language, an asset shared by hundreds of millions of people.
