Enquiry mission of Bureau International des Expositions (International Exposition Bureau - BIE) visits Spain

The delegation will evaluate Malaga's candidature to host the 2027 Specialised Expo, with its proposed theme of “The Urban Era: towards the Sustainable City"

September 25, 2022
The Enquiry Mission of the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) arrives in Spain today and will visit Madrid and Malaga until next Friday. The delegation, headed up by the Chairman of the Rules Committee of the BIE, Alain Berger, will assess the candidature of Malaga to host the 2027 Specialised Expo, to which end it will make several institutional visits and hold work meetings with the relevant authorities.

The National Committee of the 2027 Malaga Expo will meet tomorrow at the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation in Marqués de Salamanca (Madrid). Subsequently, Minister José Manuel Albares will receive the Enquiry Mission at Viana Palace. The day will end with meetings with H.M. the King and with the President of the Government. On Tuesday, 27 September, the delegation will be received by the First Vice-President of the Lower House of Parliament and will visit the Economic and Social Council, Spanish Cultural Action and the National Prado Museum. On the same afternoon, the delegation will travel to Malaga, the location of the proposed candidature.

The members of the delegation will hold a work meeting on Wednesday at the offices of Malaga City Council, including the participation of the city mayor, Francisco de la Torre, and will take part in a reception offered by the President of the Regional Government of Andalusia, Juanma Moreno and the President of the Provincial Council of Malaga, Francisco Salado. The delegation’s work will continue until Friday, 30 September, when it will hold a meeting with the municipal team and the political groups at City Hall and offer a press briefing to bring the visit to a close.

Over the course of this week, the Enquiry Mission will see first-hand the candidature of Malaga to host the 2027 Expo, a Spanish commitment stemming from the joint work of the City Council of Malaga, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Regional Government of Andalusia and the Provincial Council of Malaga.

The Urban Era: towards the Sustainable City

On 20 June 2022, Spain presented the candidacy of Malaga to host the 2027 Specialised Exposition at the 170th General Assembly of the BIE (Bureau des Expositions), with the theme “The Urban Era: towards the Sustainable City”. Spain is competing against four other candidatures: Argentina, the United States, Serbia and Thailand, and must defend its candidature at the assemblies in November 2022 and June 2023, when the winning city will be announced.

“The Urban Era: towards the Sustainable City” is a proposal that connects and is based on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) of the United Nations for 2030. This theme calls for reflection on one of the main challenges facing contemporary society in the medium and long term: making demographic growth and urban development compatible with environmental protection and the adoption of innovative solutions that guarantee improvements in the quality of life of city-dwellers.

The BIE, with its headquarters in Paris, sends out Enquiry Missions to the candidate cities with a view to examining whether they meet the minimum requirements needed to guarantee the correct organisation and holding of the exposition in the event of being voted in by the organisation’s Member States.

The Enquiry Missions apply very strict criteria, the same for all the candidatures accepted, which include evaluations of questions of a technical and financial nature, along with the political and social support for the Expo. In the case of EXPO2027 Málaga, the candidature has the backing of all tiers of government and civil society and the population in general. In addition, Malaga has a series of strengths that differentiate it from the other candidate cities to host the 2027 Exposition.

More information on the project can be found on the website https://expo2027.malaga.eu/es/ and on the official social media of the candidature.
