On Monday, Spain and the United States held the first ever high-level bilateral seminar on cybersecurity at the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation. The seminar was inaugurated by the Under-Secretary of State of the USA, Wendy Sherman, and the State Secretary for Foreign and Global Affairs, Ángeles Moreno Bau.

In her first visit to Spain, the Under-Secretary of State of the USA met with the Minister for Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, José Manuel Albares, to discuss the crisis in Ukraine, the holding of the upcoming NATO Summit in Madrid in June and bilateral relations between the two countries. She also held a bilateral meeting with her Spanish counterpart, Ángeles Moreno Bau. In the current context, trans-Atlantic unity is of even greater importance in tackling the Russian aggression in Ukraine in all its elements.

The seminar included the participation of delegations formed by members of the public authorities, companies and civil society from both countries. The meeting served for the US and Spanish groups of experts to exchange relevant information and mutual experiences on issues related to cybersecurity.

During the seminar, they addressed in detail the respective national resilience systems, the protection of critical infrastructure, the fight against cyberattacks and cyber incidents, along with the repression of the malicious and criminal use of cyberspace. The participants also agreed to closely coordinate at different multilateral forums governing the use of telecommunications and information technologies, Internet networks and cyberspace as a common global asset.

This seminar is undoubtedly an example of the good coordination that exists on this matter between Spain and the United States, which has served for both parties to step up their cooperation on cybersecurity – a priority for Spanish foreign action.
