Electronic Citizen Certificate

​The Electronic Citizen Certificate is an electronic certification issued by the Fábrica Nacional de Moneda y Timbre (FNMT) that allows its holder to authenticate securely online and carry out administrative procedures.

Who Can Apply?

All Spanish nationals and foreign residents of legal age or emancipated individuals who possess a valid physical DNI or a Foreign Identification Card (TIE) can obtain a digital certificate. Foreign citizens with a Foreign Identification Number (NIE) may apply if they provide a verifiable official document proving the issuance of their NIE, along with valid and current identification.

How to Obtain It


The certificate can be obtained as a downloadable file through the methods outlined on the FNMT websiteIt opens in new window. These include authentication via an electronic DNI, in-person verification at an office, or video identification (the latter requires a service fee).

It can also be obtained as a downloadable file, free of charge, by applying in person at the Spanish Embassy in Ottawa​. In this case, the following steps, detailed on the FNMT website​, must be followed​It opens in new window:

  1. Before applying for the certificate: Check the browser configuration instructions on the computer you will use to request the certificate and make the necessary adjustments.
  2. Request the certificate online: After configuring the browser, follow the FNMT's instructions to apply online. At the end of the application process, you will receive an application code via email that is required to complete the process.
  3. Verify your identity at an accreditation office: This step can be completed at the Spanish Embassy in Ottawa ​by presenting the following:
    1. A printed application form​It opens in new window
    2. ​​The original and a photocopy of the DNI or NIE.
    3. The application code provided by the FNMT, which must be written on the application form.

  5. ​Within one or two business days, the user certificate can be downloaded using the application code and the same computer, browser, and user profile used for the application. It is recommended to create a backup copy of the electronic certificate.​​
