The IMO approves the strategy to decarbonise maritime transport in 2050

Spain has played a key role in the agreement as President of the Council of the IMO and of the EU.

The new strategy calls for net zero carbon emissions by 2050, and a commitment to adopt alternative fuels with zero or near zero emissions by 2030.

The Spanish delegation welcomed the new decarbonisation strategy with great satisfaction, and reiterated its willingness to continue collaborating with the OMI Member States to achieve this objective.

Likewise, the IMO designated the north-western Mediterranean as a Particularly Sensitive Maritime Area, an additional protection figure for cetaceans in those waters.
