75th Anniversary of the Directorate General for Consular Affairs

Minister José Manuel Albares closed the ceremony to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the creation of the Directorate General for Consular Affairs within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In his speech, the head of Spanish diplomacy highlighted the importance of consular action and underlined the work of the General Council of Spanish Citizenship Abroad.

The Auditorium at the Marqués de Salamanca headquarters brought together guests and participants for a round table discussion on the history of the Directorate General since its creation in 1949. After the inauguration by the Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Luis Manuel Cuesta, and the screening of an institutional video, Violeta Alonso, President of the General Council of Spanish Citizenship Abroad (CGCEE), Rosario Bernal, Consul General of Spain in London, and Ambassador Santiago Cabanas, Director-General of Consular and Migratory Affairs between August 2010 and July 2011, took the floor. 

At the closing ceremony, Minister Albares decorated the General Council of Spanish Citizenship Abroad, awarding the Plaque of Honour of the Order of Civil Merit to the institution’s President.
