The Minister for Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, José Manuel Albares, held a meeting with his Nigerian counterpart, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, on Thursday, 8 January, in Madrid, with the aim of giving new impetus to political contacts between the two countries. In this regard, both ministers proposed holding new political consultations to follow on from those already held in 2023 and 2025.

The two ministers, who met in the context of the Conference of Ambassadors, which this year features the Nigerian Foreign Minister as a guest, also noted the progress made in the Africa Strategy (2025-2028), which in one year has fulfilled 36% of the proposed lines of action. Both also highlighted the launch of the Interministerial Commission for Africa and the Spain-Africa Advisory Council, which includes a Nigerian woman among its members.

Albares highlighted that Nigeria is one of Spain's main suppliers of energy resources and a reliable partner. He also expressed his confidence that this relationship should be strengthened by creating new job opportunities through greater investment.

The Minister for Foreign Affairs welcomed Nigeria's entry into the Council of the International Maritime Organisation, a candidacy that Spain has supported. They also had the opportunity to discuss other issues of interest, such as the security situation in the African country, the adoption of the Luanda Declaration and the steps taken towards peace, prosperity and effective multilateralism.
