The Minister for Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, José Manuel Albares, met this Thursday, 4 September, with his Serbian counterpart, Foreign Minister Marco Djurić, with whom he discussed the main challenges on the bilateral and European agenda.
Spain and Serbia maintain good bilateral relations, which both countries hope to continue strengthening and deepening, including in the areas of trade and business, as well as to promote the teaching of Spanish in Serbia.
In 2026, the 110th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations and the 50th anniversary of the reopening of their embassies will be celebrated. Furthermore, Spain has confirmed its participation in Expo 2027 in Belgrade with a main pavilion.
During the meeting, which took place at the Palace of Viana, the ministers signed a cooperation agreement between the Diplomatic Schools of both countries.
The enlargement of the European Union and Spain's support for Serbia's aspirations on its European path were also part of the discussions. "Spain supports Serbia's candidacy to join the European Union and encourages it to carry out the necessary reforms", Albares stated, recalling that, in 2023, both countries signed an agreement to promote cooperation towards Serbia's integration into the EU.
