The Minister for Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, José Manuel Albares, is taking part, from Sunday 29 June, in the events at the International Conference on Financing for Development, which will be held in Seville from 30 June to 3 July and aims to approve a new framework for development financing.
It is in this context that Spain becomes the centre of global reflection on cooperation, with Seville as the venue for creating a new ambitious, clear and operational global financing framework, at a particularly important time for the entire global cooperation system.
Albares views this Conference as an excellent opportunity for the international community to redefine the global strategy and leverage the resources needed to accelerate the Sustainable Development Goals, five years out from the conclusion of the 2030 Agenda. The Seville Conference also represents a great opportunity to renew the commitment to multilateralism and international cooperation.
The Minister will be one of the hosts of the Conference, which Spain is chairing, and will play a significant role in leading the event. Up to 12,000 people are expected to attend, including more than 200 official delegations, around 60 heads of State and Government, and up to 150 ministers, as well as many civil society, academics and private sector representatives.
After the formal events on Sunday, Albares will begin the working days with the inaugural session on Monday, 30 June, which will start a general debate that will last until the afternoon of 3 July. During this time, six roundtables will be held, focusing on the action areas of the financing for development agenda: taxation; private financing; development cooperation; trade and science, technology and innovation; debt; international financial architecture.
There will also be multiple side events on the margins of the Conference. As host, Spain will lead six of these events. The magnitude of the Conference can also be seen in the number of side events, which will total around 400, in addition to a Civil Society Forum, a Feminist Forum and the Local and Regional Governments Day, which will see participation from representatives of the Spanish autonomous governments and local entities.
