PRESS RELEASE 063

Albares to discuss the Middle East crisis with his new Egyptian counterpart

The Spanish Minister for Foreign Affairs travels to Cairo, where he will also present a UN Women cooperation project

October 11, 2024
The Minister for Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, José Manuel Albares, travels to Cairo this Tuesday to discuss the situation in the Middle East with his new Egyptian counterpart, Badr Abdelatty.

On this latest visit to Cairo, following his trip on 3 June and Abdelatty's presence at the Madrid meeting of the Euro-Arab/Islamic group on 13 September, Minister Albares plans to highlight Egypt's constructive role towards peace and its dialogue with all regional players.

He also plans to highlight Egypt's efforts to negotiate a ceasefire agreement that would allow for the immediate release of all hostages and a massive influx of humanitarian aid.

The Spanish Minister for Foreign Affairs further intends to convey, to his new Egyptian counterpart, Spain's solidarity with the situation in the country resulting from the forced displacement of the Palestinian population, which could have regional consequences. The minister will also spotlight the historical importance of Egypt, which was the first Arab country to sign a peace agreement with Israel.

Additionally, Albares will take part in the presentation ceremony for the UN Women project “Egyptian women's leadership in the observance of UN Security Council Resolution 1325”, with the Ministers for Planning and for Solidarity and Abdelatty himself.

The project, with €400,000 in funding, is being carried out in partnership with the National Council for Women, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Cairo International Centre for Conflict Resolution, Peacekeeping and Peacebuilding.
