Today, 24 April, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, José Manuel Albares, held a lunch and met with the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Worship of Costa Rica, Arnoldo André, at the Palace of Viana. During the meeting, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed on the international promotion of the Spanish language in diplomatic circles and international organisations.
The agreement vindicates Spanish as global language, being the second most widely spoken native language in the world and an official language of the United Nations. The Memorandum of Understanding also underscores the commitment from Ibero-American countries to international law and the peaceful settlement of disputes, and especially to international legal cooperation.
During the meeting, the two ministers reviewed the bilateral, regional and multilateral agenda, highlighting their common ground on the main issues, and noted the excellent state of relations between Spain and Costa Rica, expressing interest in continuing to deepen and broaden them, addressing new common challenges such as migration.
At the meeting, Minister Albares reiterated to his Costa Rican counterpart Spain's historic commitment to cooperation in Costa Rica, which celebrates 40 years this year, and to the Central American integration process through the Central American Integration System (SICA), which includes Spain as an extra-regional Observer State, accompanying its socio-economic and institutional development, especially during these uncertain times.
