PRESS RELEASE 094

In Paris, José Manuel Albares supports Malaga’s candidature to host 2027 World Expo

November 28, 2022
The Minister for Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, José Manuel Albares, travelled to Paris to support Malaga’s candidature to host the 2027 World Expo at the 171st Assembly of the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) being held today and tomorrow in the French capital. Malaga’s candidature, with the slogan ‘The urban era: towards the sustainable city’, is competing against proposals from cities in Argentina, the United States, Serbia and Thailand. The winner will be announced at the next assembly of the BIE in June 2023.
Minister Albares headed up the Spanish delegation to advocate the candidature of Malaga which, as a country project, also included representatives from the Regional Government of Andalusia, the Provincial Council of Malaga, the City Council of Malaga and internationally-renowned Spanish personalities.

Since the official presentation of Malaga’s candidature back in June at the 170th General Assembly of the BIE, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has also taken part in promoting the candidature by presenting it to the diplomatic corps accredited in Spain to enhance its visibility and disseminate it at an international level.

In addition, Minister José Manuel Albares received the Enquiry Mission of the Bureau International des Expositions, which travelled to Spain in September to assess Malaga’s candidature. The Enquiry Mission applies very strict barometers to assess questions of both a technical and a financial nature, along with the political and social backing to host the World Expo.

In the case of EXPO2027 Málaga, the candidature is backed by all tiers of government, civil society and the people in general. Furthermore, Malaga’s candidature has a series of strengths that differentiate it from the other candidates to host the World Expo in 2027.

The urban era: towards the sustainable city

“The urban era: towards the sustainable city” is a proposal that links in and has the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) for 2030 at its very heart. The theme proposes a reflection on one of the main challenges facing contemporary society in the medium and long term: to make demographic growth and urban development compatible with environmental protection and the adoption of innovative solutions that guarantee a better quality of life of city-dwellers.

More information on the project can be found on the website https://expo2027.malaga.eu/es/ and the official social media of the candidature.
