José Manuel Albares to set out priorities of Spanish Presidency of EU for Latin America at CELAC Summit

The Minister for Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, José Manuel Albares, will attend the European Union (EU) and Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) ministerial meeting, which starts tomorrow in Buenos Aires and at which Spain will set out its priorities for the region during the Spanish Presidency of the EU.

José Manuel Albares will attend this important event with the aim of further stepping up this relationship between the two regions that share the same interests and are committed to the values of democracy, the rule of law, respect for human rights and multilateralism to resolve conflicts.

He will also attend the meeting of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), where the Minister for Foreign Affairs will take the floor to outline these ideas, which he will also convey in a busy schedule of bilateral meetings that will take place within the framework of his visit to Buenos Aires. On Thursday, 27 October, the minister will take part in the EU-CELAC meeting which will be inaugurated by the President of Argentina, Alberto Fernández, and closed off by the High Representative, Josep Borrell, along with the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Argentina, Santiago Cafiero.

Busy schedule

Specifically, José Manuel Albares will begin his visit to the Argentinian capital with a meeting with his counterpart, followed by a meeting with the Minister of Economy, Sergio Massa. With them, he will have the chance to review the numerous cultural, economic and political ties that unite Spain and Argentina, and also to analyse the difficult international context.

The Minister for Foreign Affairs is also scheduled to hold a meeting with the President of the Chamber of Deputies, Cecilia Moreau, and with officials from the Committee of Foreign Affairs of the Senate, where he will also meet with senior officials of the Group of Friends of Spain. The minister’s schedule also includes a reception at the Spanish Club with Spanish associations, regional houses and the Spanish colony resident in Buenos Aires to learn first-hand about their situation.​
