The Minister for Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, José Manuel Albares, today signed a total of four agreements with his Mexican counterpart, Marcelo Ebrard, to further step up close relations and the dynamics between the two countries that share a history, language, interests and values.
Specifically, the visit by the Spanish minister to Mexico led to the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on the establishment of the bilateral Standing Political Sub-Committee; another on collaboration on Feminist Foreign Policy; a modified complementary Agreement on the Basic Convention on Scientific and Technical Cooperation for the financing of cooperation programmes and projects, and a Memorandum of Understanding for collaboration within the framework of the holding of the Global Conference on "MONDIACULT" Cultural and Sustainable Development Policies.
By signing these agreements, which took place at the headquarters of the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the two countries reaffirm the value they assign to their relationship of fraternity and agree on the importance of the 45th anniversary of the resumption of diplomatic relations between Mexico and Spain to be held on 28 March. This relationship is also clearly highlighted in the fight against COVID-19, regarding which the two ministers underlined the importance of mutual solidarity.
During the meeting, the two ministers highlighted the soundness of the legal and institutional framework and the need to develop the full potential between the two countries. In particular, they proposed holding the 13th Meeting of the Binational Commission so that its five sub-committees could underline their results and agreed on the importance of forging inter-parliamentary dialogue.
Economic relations between the two countries played a major part in the talks between the two foreign affairs ministers, who welcomed the fact that their economies were of a complementary nature and underlined the mutually-beneficial effects of investment in each other’s country. In this regard, both José Manuel Albares and Marcelo Ebrard indicated their commitment to maintain a positive economic association.
Ukraine
The meeting also served to highlight the agreement between the Spanish and Mexican ministers on the importance of continuing to promote multilateralism and of reaffirming their commitment to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine and to demand the cessation of the use of force by the Russian Federation.
As regards the European Union, they highlighted the importance of the upcoming signing of the modernised Global Mexico-EU Agreement and of strengthening relations between Latin America and the EU; while also endorsing their commitment to the Ibero-American Conference and to extending its cooperation mechanisms.
This cooperation recognises the development of bilateral ties as one of its main pillars. In this regard, they welcomed the 25th anniversary of the Joint Technical and Scientific Cooperation Fund (2021) and agreed to take action within the framework of the Comprehensive Development Plan in Central America.
Lastly, the Spanish language also played a privileged role in their talks, regarding which they underlined the value of their shared language.
