PRESS STATEMENT 033

Spain condemns attacks on critical energy infrastructure in Middle East and calls for immediate cessation

Today

The Spanish Government condemns attacks on critical energy infrastructure, such as the Israeli attack on South Pars in Iran, and Iran’s attacks on the energy infrastructure of Gulf countries, the most recent being the brutal bombing of Ras Laffan in Qatar, which Spain rejects in the strongest possible terms. These attacks represent a further escalation of the conflict, with unpredictable human and environmental consequences.

In this regard, it condemns the evacuation warning issued by Iran to the population of Gulf countries living near gas plants or oil refineries, which is illegal, unjustifiable and impossible to comply with. This warning demonstrates the intention to deliberately carry out attacks that are flagrantly illegal under international law.

Attacks on energy infrastructure constitute a violation of international humanitarian law and threaten the lives of innocent civilians.

Spain calls on all parties to exercise restraint in order to avoid further destabilising effects with global consequences.

The Spanish Government supports the efforts of the Gulf countries towards an urgent de-escalation.
