PRESS STATEMENT 030

Spain condemns attack on medical facility in Lebanon

Today
The Spanish Government condemns in the strongest possible terms the Israeli attack on a medical facility in Bint Jbeil, in southern Lebanon, which has resulted in the deaths of twelve members of the facility’s medical and healthcare staff.

The Spanish Government extends its deepest condolences to the families of the victims and wishes a speedy recovery to those injured.

Attacks on hospitals, in this and other contexts such as Gaza, constitute a flagrant and unacceptable violation of international humanitarian law, and must be investigated. Hospitals are never military targets.

Spain reiterates its total commitment to protecting the essential work carried out by doctors and healthcare staff, particularly in conflict zones, where their work saves human lives.

Furthermore, Spain condemns the ongoing Israeli attacks against UNIFIL, which yesterday caused a fire at the Nepalese contingent’s barracks.

Spain reiterates its commitment to compliance with resolution 1701 and its unwavering support for UNIFIL’s mandate, and calls for guarantees regarding its safety.
