PRESS STATEMENT 028

Statement on the current situation in Lebanon

Yesterday
Spanish Government expresses utmost concern at serious deterioration of situation in Lebanon. Spain recognises the efforts of the Lebanese Government to achieve a State monopoly on the use of force and condemns Hezbollah's indiscriminate attacks against Israel, which could lead to a new spiral of violence and suffering.

Spain also condemns the intense attacks launched by Israel against Lebanon, and particularly against its capital Beirut, on densely populated areas, causing numerous casualties among the civilian population.

Spain also expresses its total rejection of the Israeli army's illegal and unjustified order to evacuate the civilian population south of the Zahrani River, which is totally disproportionate and contrary to international law.

Spain demands an end to these actions and full respect for Lebanon's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

In the face of the worsening humanitarian catastrophe, Spain reiterates its solidarity and will provide a new financial aid package of €9 million to alleviate the suffering of the Lebanese people and the refugee crisis.

Spain remains firmly committed to full compliance with resolution 1701 and its support for the UNIFIL mandate, demanding that all parties respect the security of the deployed contingent.
