PRESS STATEMENT 050

Condemnation of attacks and call for de-escalation in Middle East

The Spanish Government expresses its concern at the escalation of violence in the Middle East, which seriously threatens the sustainability of the current ceasefire, and strongly condemns the unjustified attacks against the United Arab Emirates and Oman. Spain calls on all parties to exercise restraint and bring about a definitive end to the violence.

All parties must fulfil their obligations under international law, including freedom of navigation and respect for the law of the sea, in line with resolution 2817, and ensure free and safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz.

The Spanish Government reiterates its support for the ongoing negotiations and acknowledges Pakistan’s role as mediator, and calls on the parties to commit to a negotiated solution as the only means of resolving outstanding disputes with Iran. Spain will continue to work with European and regional partners to promote peace and stability throughout the Middle East.
