PRESS STATEMENT 057

Condemnation of escalation of violence in southern Lebanon and call for respect for ceasefire

Spain strongly condemns the resurgence of violence in southern Lebanon, with the expansion of Israeli military operations and attacks by Hezbollah, and calls on the parties to fully respect the ceasefire of 16 April

Today

The expansion of the Israeli ground incursion into southern Lebanon constitutes a violation of its sovereignty and territorial integrity, hinders the ongoing direct talks, exacerbates the humanitarian crisis and undermines international efforts to consolidate the ceasefire and stability in Lebanon. The Government acknowledges the efforts of the United States to de-escalate the violence in Lebanon and supports international initiatives aimed at this objective.

Spain reiterates its deep dismay and condemnation of the civilian casualties in Lebanon, the destruction of homes and civilian infrastructure, and attacks on healthcare facilities and personnel, which violate the basic principles of international humanitarian law. Successive Israeli evacuation orders and attacks on Lebanese towns are driving the civilian population from their homes, as well as threatening World Heritage cultural sites in the ancient city of Tyre and Beaufort Castle.

Spain reiterates its support for the Lebanese Government’s courageous decision to restore the state’s monopoly on the use of force throughout the country, in line with United Nations Security Council resolution 1701, and its demand for respect for Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as for international law and international humanitarian law.
