Spanish Government strengthens political and financial support for Palestinian Authority

Today
The Spanish Government strengthens its political and financial support for the Palestinian Authority with a contribution of two million euros.

With this first contribution, Spain is fulfilling its commitment to the Emergency Coalition for Palestine, an initiative launched together with Saudi Arabia, Norway and France to ensure the financial sustainability of the Palestinian Authority, which has already been joined by a total of twelve countries. The aim of this initiative is to provide financial support to the Palestinian Authority, which is at risk of financial collapse due to the withholding of its tax revenues.

The contribution from the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) is made through the EU's PEGASE instrument, the ‘Palestinian-European Mechanism for the Management of Socio-Economic Aid’, formalised with the signing on 13 October of a Memorandum of Understanding between Spain and the Palestinian Authority. PEGASE is a fundamental mechanism for supporting the payment of salaries and pensions for civil servants, hospitals in East Jerusalem and the most vulnerable Palestinian families. Since 2008, Spain has disbursed a total of €115.3 million to support the Palestinian Authority in these areas.
