The event was presided over by the United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, and the President of the General Assembly, Annalena Baerbock.
Guterres opened the events commemorating the 80th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations in the same venue where the first General Assembly was held in 1946. During the ceremony, the relevance of the United Nations being a pillar of the rule-based international order and as an essential forum for multilateral cooperation was emphasized. The need to strengthen multilateralism at a time when the international community faces complex challenges was also highlighted.
Spain is firmly committed to the United Nations and its role as a promoter of peace, international security, and sustainable development.
