Embassy Counsellor, Antonio Casado Rigalt, noted that, although Spain did not participate in the two World Wars, there were compatriots who died on the allied side whose memory deserves to be preserved. The Reverend Martin Smith, of the Apostleship of the Sea, offered a prayer in honour of the fallen. Following a minute´s silence, Defence Attaché Rafael Guerra Soler and Transport Attaché Esteban Pacha laid a wreath in memory of the Spanish merchant seamen.
The Tower Hill Memorial, located in the City of London, pays tribute to merchant seamen who died in the two World Wars whilst serving on British vessels. The names of 137 Spaniards are inscribed there.
